There was a flurry of activity in the NBA this offseason. A lot of familiar faces from last seasons playoffs have new zip codes this fall, just a few weeks shy of training camps opening. One star whose NBA future hangs in the balance is Dwyane Wade.
Wade signed with the Chicago Bulls in 2016 for two years, with the idea of a homecoming, a bigger payday than Miami was ready to issue out, and a team in playoff contention. But after a whirlwind of trade activity this summer – that include the Bulls trading Wade’s good friend Jimmy Butler to the Timberwolves – the Bulls are in rebuilding mode and it seems likely that a buyout of DWade’s last season is inevitable.
Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald says that DWade’s next destination could be either Miami or Los Angeles. There’s no distinction on which LA team DWade is eyeing. While the Clippers makes sense because they are closer to playoff contention, the Lakers could be intriguing if the rumors of LeBron James interest are true.
This move also makes sense because Wade and his wife, actress Gabrielle Union, already have a home in LA, and spent a good part of the last two months at a summer rental in Malibu. Hollywood is here, and spending a season or two in LA might not be a bad way to ease into retirement.
A reunion with the Miami Heat isn’t off the table either. DWade’s good friend and former teammate Udonis Haslem recently mentioned he wouldn’t mind if Wade returned to Miami.
The two recently vacationed together in Greece.
But first, Wade and the Bulls have to negotiate a buyout.
