The big news on Thursday, Dwight Howard is open to re-signing with the Lakers should he be traded to LA. The big news of Thursday night/Friday morning, Dwight Howard’s agent, Dan Fegan says, “whoa there” Dwight fully plans to explore free agency no matter what happens this upcoming season.
This is why I’m sick of Dwight stories. However, in this instance, it makes sense – and dollars too – that Howard wants to “explore free agency.” For the record, this is allegedly Andrew Bynum’s stance as well. The reason being, signing an extension vs. re-signing with a team is the difference between millions of dollars. Jarrod Rudolph of RealGM maintains his information was valid – there’s also this little thing called a CBA that would lowkey preclude Howard for having an agreement in place before Howard is an official free agent.
Bottom line, the best financial deal for both Howard and Bynum will be to re-sign with the team who holds their “Bird rights” than to extend their current deals.
But this could’ve all been avoided had Dwight not locked himself into another season of this drama by signing the one-year contract extension in March. That would be too logical. ::shrug:: just let me know when something is done.
