The Golden State Warriors made sure not to get too drunk on success. After winning the NBA championship, and being lowkey snubbed by players, coaches and some fans, the team returned this season with a chip on their shoulder.
On Tuesday night the Warriors beat the Los Angeles Lakers to extend their winning streak to 16, and set a new NBA record in the process.
Golden State became the sixth team in NBA history to win 20 consecutive regular-season games, a streak dating to last season. They also became the first NBA team to start a season 16-0.
The night also showed another heartbreaking effort from Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant. The Black Mamba looked more like a garden snake, shooting 1-14.
Former Warrior Jason Richardson was honored Tuesday night also. He was presented with a framed “23” jersey.
“Even though I didn’t retire a Warrior, you guys make me feel like a Warrior for life,” he told the crowd.
Richardson, part of the 2007 “We Believe” team that reached the second round of the playoffs after ending a 12-year drought, and knocking off the number one seeded Dallas Mavericks in the process.
Next up for Golden State, the Phoenix Suns will host the red hot Warriors on Friday night for their chance to stop the champs.
