Sorority “Selfie” Girls Ask Arizona Diamondbacks To Donate To Domestic Violence Charity

Last week during the TV broadcast of a game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies, a group of sorority girls were mocked for focusing harder on their selfies than the actual game.

It started when Major League Baseball announcers, Steve Berthiaume and Bob Brenly, asked fans to tweet photos of themselves during the game. The duo spent about 2 minutes joking about the ladies of Arizona State University’s Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

“Every girl in the picture is locked into her phone,” said one of the announcers. “Here’s my first bite of the churro. Here’s my second bite of the churro.” They asked if an intervention was necessary.

I guess some fans were outraged at the amount of “negative” attention the ladies recieved – personally I thought it was light hearted and hilarious – after the incident went viral, Fox Sports and the Diamondbacks offered the sorority’s members free tickets to the next game. The ladies decided to use the moment instead for service by declining the tickets, but suggesting the Diamondbacks and Fox Sports provide tickets to a future game for families at A New Leaf, a local Arizona non-profit that helps support victims of domestic violence. October began domestic violence awareness month.

“If everyone who viewed this statement took the time to make a donation in recognition of domestic violence awareness, which is Alpha Chi Omega’s national philanthropy, we would be so grateful!” said the women in a statement. “We are happy to have the opportunity to shed some positive light on such a sensitive subject.”
