The San Francisco Giants learned on Wednesday that they will be without the services of Melky Cabrera for the remainder of the season and start of the playoffs. Cabrera has been suspended by MLB for testing positive for testosterone. Cabrera was having one of his best seasons as a pro, appearing in his first all-star game last month and taking MVP honors.
Cabrera released the following statement.
“My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have used,” Cabrera said in a statement released by the players’ union. “I accept my suspension under the Joint Drug Program and I will try to move on with my life. I am deeply sorry for my mistake and I apologize to my teammates, to the San Francisco Giants organization and to the fans for letting them down.”
The Giants have 45 games left and their playoff status will certainly be impacted with the loss of Cabrera. He currently leads all the MLB in hits with 159 and his .346 batting average is second to Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Cabrera is a free agent at the end of this season.
