Love is in the air for Pittsburgh Pirates MVP Andrew McCutchen. The Pirates outfielder surprised his girlfriend Maria Hansloven, during an appearance Ellen by popping the question and letting her know he did it because he wanted the whole world to know how much he loves her.
McCutchen used a baseball analogy to discuss their relationship during the appearance.
“When I hit a home run it’s a home run, but there’s a bigger picture behind it,” McCutchen says over a montage of his play for the Pirates. “Going to first, going to second, going to third and going home; with each base that I touch, it means a year.”
McCutchen then chronicles his relationship with Hanslovan — including bumps in the road in the second year — and says that when he reaches third base and looks home he knows that she’s always there waiting for him.
“I didn’t do any of this for the publicity,” McCutchen said before popping the question. “I didn’t do any of this for the recognition. I did this to show you that if I could tell the whole world how much that I love you, I would do that.”
She said, “Yes!”
