Dodgers celebrate “Jackie Robinson day” with Magic Johnson, Harrison Ford & Rachel Robinson [photos]

On Monday April 15th, Major League Baseball celebrated “Jackie Robinson day” by honoring the former Dodger legend Jackie Robinson on the 66th anniversary of the day Robinson shattered color lines joining the team. There were ceremonies in each of the eight games played Monday night but, the moment came full circle at Dodger stadium with Robinson’s widow, Rachel Robinson on hand along with MLB’s first high level visible owner in Magic Johnson. Also on hand for the occasion, one of the stars from the recently released, “42,” Harrison Ford. “42” took over the box office in it’s opening weekend, locking up the #1 spot with a box office take of $27.3 million.

Outfielder Matt Kemp, one of a hand full of black players currently in the MLB, has donated $10,000 to “The Jackie Robinson foundation” run by his 90-year old widow Rachel and her daughter Sharon was established following Robinson’s death in 1973. Kemp’s 10K will be a scholarship to benefit a minority student in need.

Robinson’s number 42 jersey is retired for every team in the MLB.

New Era also release their newest commercial spot titled ‘First Changes Everything’ in tribute to Robinson.
