Egyptian Olympic athletes will be wearing counterfeit Nike apparel for London games

While the US Olympic squad is being outfitted by Ralph Lauren, the Egyptian jocks believed they were being outfitted by Nike at a discounted rate from a Chinese distributor.

You know what they say, if something sounds to good to be true it probably is. Looks as if the Egyptians received counterfeit merchandise. Some of the items even feature Nike logos with Adidas zippers. General Mahmoud Ahmed Ali, the country’s committee chairman had this to say about the mix-up:

if Nike is displeased with the apparel, the company should take it up with the aforementioned Chinese distributor. Nike released a statement reading, in part, “Nike is highly concerned that if these allegations are true, the athletes will have received products that do not meet Nike’s quality standards,” and, “We are now in discussions with them to see if a solution can be reached.”

“We bought the clothing from a Nike agent. You can never tell the difference between the original and the fake ones. All Nike products in the Egyptian Market are made in China. They all have the same logo. How can you know?”

The opening ceremony takes place Friday evening. Sounds as if Egypt will be swathed in questionable attire. I know that’s not the point of the games but it is a point of interest. How embarrassing.
