One area in particular that is hard for people to get beyond in this Ray Rice drama, is how his wife Janay could stay with him after such a horrifying incident. People who have no experience with domestic violence can’t fathom the decision making process.

Or, they take the approach, if she likes it, who am I to question it. That’s why the Twitter hashtags #WhyIStayed and #WhyILeft were so important this week in showing the various situations women of domestic violence experienced. Early Thursday morning on Twitter, Indiana Pacers star Paul George decided to share his thoughts on the topic. Like many, George felt that if Janay can forgive Ray, than certainly the rest of the world should be able to as well. George’s sentiments were met with immediate backlash. Even Pacers team president Larry Bird apologized and George eventually deleted the tweets and issued his own apology.

“Paul George’s tweets from earlier were thoughtless and without regard to the subject of domestic violence and its seriousness in society. We have talked to Paul to strongly express our displeasure and made it clear that the NBA and the Pacers’ organization will not condone or tolerate remarks of this nature. Paul understands that he was wrong and why his tweets were so inappropriate and is very apologetic.”
