USA Baseball has named the 36 female players for the 2015 USA Baseball Women’s National Team Trials. The names were generated by a process established by the U.S. Olympic Committee.

The actual trials will now be held between May 22nd and 24th, after which the final 18 players for the USA’s team squad for the Women’s Pan American Games will be named.

The complete list of 36 can be seen at the USA Baseball news site. It includes women players from 13 different states, and one player from Washington D.C.

California is the most-represented state with no less than nine of the 36 players coming for the trials. Next up is the lone-star state of Texas with six of the athletes, then Florida with four. South Carolina and Illinois and South Carolina have three players apiece, whilst Washington state and Georgia each have two athletes. The other states represented with one player each are Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, Kansas, Colorado and Alaska.

The finalized team will be managed by Jonathan Pollard. Pollard managed the team that won a silver medal at the Women’s Baseball World Cup in Japan last year. Pollard also gained a silver medal when he was the pitching coach with the U.S. Ladies’ National Team at the 2012 IBAF Women’s World Cup. So, he certainly had the pedigree and will be wanting to go one better. And he might just do that. But it will be no pushover with hosts Canada, as well as Cuba, expected to do well. The baseball tournament at the Pan American Games to be held in Toronto will take place between July 11th and 26th 2015, at the “President’s Choice Ajax Pan Am Ballpark”, in Ajax, Southern Ontario.

Women’s baseball will make its debut at the Pan American Games, with five women’s teams competing in the tournament. In addition to team USA and the aforementioned Canada and Cuba will be teams from Venezuela and Puerto Rico.

Alongside Pollard in the USA’s dugout will be pitching coach Matt Weagle. Weagle was also pitching coach for the 2014 USA Baseball Women’s National Team.

With such a strong line-up and with women’s baseball gaining ever more traction across the country, team USA will surely be expecting the gold medal. But the hosts may be difficult to overcome on their home turf. All in all, it promises to be a fascinating tournament.
