The film stars Laya DeLeon Hayes as Vicaria, Denzel Whitaker as Kango, Chad L. Coleman as Donald, Reilly Brooke Stith as Aisha, Keith Sean Holliday as Jamaal, and Amani Summer as Jada. It was written and directed by Bomani Story.
Story talked with Jill Munroe about developing the concept for the film based on Mary Shelly’s “Frankenstein” and centering it around a teenage nerdy Black girl who is into science.
“First, it starts with the literature. I think many people have lost sight of the monster being just a side character in the book; the book is about Frankenstein, right? The book does an incredible job of showing the rise and fall of this man or mad scientist. So what I wanted to do with this was refocus that and bring it back to where the story belongs, which is in the hands of the lead, our lead Vicaria. So, I really wanted to ground her and justify her ambitions, and, based it in reality as much as I possibly can, because when I read the book, I felt like, you know, Victor Frankenstein, like she was writing it for the time that she was in, that’s what I felt like when I read it. And it felt more like a drama like this tragedy, this tense situation for this man who did something crazy.”
Story continued, “so it started with the literature, and then as it branched out, it also became about, I have two older sisters who I grew up with, who are basically my first contact with intelligence. Because when you’re young, you don’t want to listen to anything your parents got to say, so they’re not gonna sound smart to you, but older sisters who are close enough in age for you to get along with them, but far enough away for you to respect their intelligence. So they are my muse.”

In a recent interview during the AAFCA ROundtable series, Chef Reynolds shed light on her choices for the Los Angeles episode and what she wanted to highlight in her hometown. Some claim that LA lacks a distinct food culture, often associating it more with aesthetics and ambiance than exceptional cuisine. However, Chef Reynolds disagrees. She emphasizes the incredible diversity within LA and the multitude of culinary treasures hidden within the city’s borders.
One highlight of the Los Angeles episode is Woody’s Barbecue, a testament to the supportive and interconnected nature of the local food community. Chef Reynolds wanted to emphasize the spirit of collaboration and unity among black entrepreneurs. Woody’s Barbecue, a long-standing establishment that has weathered the storms of gentrification, symbolizes resilience and tradition. Through this example, Chef Reynolds inspires viewers to support one another and keep the legacy of black entrepreneurship alive.
Another fascinating aspect Chef Reynolds explores in LA is the influence of Korean culture on the city’s culinary landscape. Growing up near Korea Town, she was captivated by the prevalence of Korean barbecue and its fusion with other cuisines. The Korean community’s dedication to family and love, evident in their traditional practices like communal spa visits, serves as a source of inspiration. Chef Reynolds encourages viewers to embrace similar values of unity and appreciation for one another, emphasizing that celebrating our culture and heritage is not about exclusion but fostering love and understanding.
The episode also touches upon the historical significance of taco shops in LA. Chef Reynolds draws attention to the resilience of the people behind these establishments, who were once marginalized and worked under challenging conditions. Despite their difficult past, these individuals found strength in their faith and family ties, exemplifying the importance of gratitude and community support. Through their stories, Chef Reynolds aims to challenge preconceived notions and offer a fresh perspective on soul food.
“Searching for Soul Food” goes beyond mere culinary exploration. It celebrates the history, family bonds, and love that give soul food its true essence. Chef Reynolds strives to redefine soul food as a global phenomenon, breaking down barriers and encouraging viewers to appreciate different cultures’ rich traditions and legacies.
Chef Reynolds presents a compelling narrative that challenges misconceptions about the city’s food culture by highlighting the entrepreneurial spirit, unity, and cultural influences within Los Angeles. From Woody’s Barbecue to the fusion of Korean and American cuisines, viewers are taken on a journey that underscores the importance of community, love, and the power of embracing diverse culinary experiences.
“Searching for Soul Food” not only tantalizes the taste buds but also nourishes the soul. It reminds us of the deep connections between food, culture, and the human experience. Through Chef Reynolds’ passion and storytelling, viewers are inspired to explore the world of soul food, appreciating the flavors that unite us and the stories that shape our collective culinary heritage.

Cooper Saxe, a tenacious U.S. Attorney based in New York, dedicated his career to a single-minded objective: to see James St. Patrick behind bars. Despite his relentless efforts, Saxe fell short of achieving this goal, which fueled an enduring animosity towards the St. Patrick family and their associates. Originally introduced in the original Power series, his disdain for them took on new dimensions. It escalated in Power Book II: Ghost, where Saxe paradoxically found himself working as Tariq St. Patrick’s defense attorney. In his zealous pursuit to bring down Tariq, Saxe became entangled with prosecutor Jenny Sullivan, with whom he harbored romantic feelings. Together, they committed deceit, document theft, and other unscrupulous acts. Tragically, this treacherous path ultimately led to the demise of Cooper Saxe in episode eight.
In an Instagram Live interview, Johnson recently talked with Jill Munroe and her Power After Plug co-host. Johnson was one of the first guests on our recap show in season one when we first began covering the show on AfterBuzz TV. Johnson reflects on his time with the series and shares his thoughts on how Saxe was murdered – spoiler alert; he didn’t like it. And also provides insight into his early roles and future projects.

In the first season, we were introduced to the dynamic friendships that bind our protagonists. In season two, the focus shifts towards delving deeper into their stories. Webb, who portrays the vibrant Renee, shares her excitement about bringing out and establishing new aspects of her character. “With everything bubbling at the surface, the cliffhangers from the previous season fuel their journeys, allowing us to witness their successes and failures. I left my job, and I was leaving my husband. Renee’s choices and challenges take center stage as she confronts her past, her family, and her newfound singlehood.”
Webb explained, “We’re choosing to be selfish, and at the same time, choosing our careers, choosing our hearts desires, truly. I was excited to show where Renee comes from; you see more of Chicago and her family. She’s single, and what that looks like.” Brace yourself for surprises, as a familiar face might also make a comeback.”
Beyond the captivating plotlines, the cast members have undergone personal growth and transformation throughout their careers. Corbin Reid, who plays Sondi, reflects on her early beliefs and their evolution. Initially craving instant success in her 20s, she realized that actual achievements come with great responsibility and require patience. Trusting in divine timing and waiting for the right opportunities to materialize became paramount in her journey.
Amber Stevens West, who portrays the determined Whitney, emphasizes recognizing her power and agency. As she has grown as a woman, she has realized that she holds the reins to her own life. Believing in herself and making choices aligned with her true desires have created her fulfillment. She shared, “I’ve learned that I have more power than I thought I did, in the sense that I am in control of my life. And I get to decide what I want to do with it. And so if I really believe in myself, and I stand in that power, then I’m going to enjoy the journey that I’m on. And so, when it comes to my work, I’ve now learned to shift my gaze when looking at a new script, potential project, or something for myself. I have to live that experience, uproot my family potentially, and still have to be a parent but also go to work. So I want to enjoy myself everywhere I go. And I’ve learned that I have more power in that I can choose to say no, and really either create or wait for positive impact in the opportunities I seek.” With newfound confidence and a deeper understanding of her worth, she can enjoy the journey while balancing her professional pursuits with her role as a parent.
For Bresha Webb, the focus has shifted to being more present and cherishing the moment. She has learned to celebrate her accomplishments and extend grace to herself in a career that often demands constant movement and progress. Taking in the joys of the present and expressing gratitude for her journey have become guiding principles for her.
With its compelling storylines and relatable characters, “Run the World” continues to captivate audiences with its second season. ]]>
The Knicks and Heat first met in the playoffs in 1997, with the Heat coming out on top in a hard-fought series that went seven games. The following year, the two teams met again in the playoffs, this time in the Eastern Conference Finals. The series was marked by physical play and intense competition, with the Knicks ultimately prevailing in five games to advance to the NBA Finals.
The rivalry between the two teams reached a boiling point in the 1998-1999 season when the Knicks and Heat met in the first round of the playoffs. A bench-clearing brawl erupted in Game 5 of the series after Charlie Ward of the Knicks and P.J. Brown of the Heat got into a scuffle. The brawl resulted in several suspensions, including a two-game suspension for Ward and a six-game suspension for Brown.
However, the most memorable moment of the Knicks-Heat rivalry occurred during a regular-season game in 1998. The Knicks were playing the Heat at Madison Square Garden when a fight broke out between the two teams. Knicks head coach Jeff Van Gundy ran onto the court to break up the fight but was quickly caught in the chaos.
As the players continued pushing and shoving each other, Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning grabbed Van Gundy by the leg and dragged him across the court. Van Gundy clung to Mourning’s leg for dear life but was ultimately pulled away and left lying on the court.
The incident quickly became one of the most iconic moments in NBA history. The image of Van Gundy desperately clinging to Mourning’s leg was replayed on sports highlight shows for years to come. It also added fuel to the already intense rivalry between the Knicks and the Heat, with Van Gundy later saying that he believed Mourning had intentionally tried to hurt him.
Despite the intense animosity between the two teams, the Knicks-Heat rivalry has also produced some incredible basketball moments. The rivalry has given fans some of the most exciting and memorable games in NBA history, from Allan Houston’s buzzer-beater in the 1999 playoffs to the Knicks’ upset of the Heat in the 2012 playoffs.
The rivalry has cooled off as of late as both teams have struggled to compete at the highest level. But the second round of the 2023 NBA playoffs will see that renewed. No matter the outcome, the passion and intensity that characterized the Knicks-Heat rivalry in the 1990s will always be remembered as one of the most iconic and intense rivalries in the history of the NBA.

The eight-episode docuseries began airing on STARZ on October 23. The same network features a fictionalized version of the story entitled “BMF,” which stars Demetrius “Lil Meech” Flenory” jr, D’avinci, Lala Anthony, Wood Harris, and more.
The docuseries features interviews with Meech, former BMF associates, law enforcement officials who worked on the case, 50 Cent (he’s also a producer,) T.I., and others.
BMF docuseries EP and director Shan Nicholson discussed the docuseries and the process it took to get Meech, and the participants to participate in the doc, which includes revealing details of some of the crimes they committed during the AAFCA Roundtable series.
According to Nicholson, “all of the plot points that we unveil have all been adjudicated. So, in essence, no one can really get in trouble for talking about how they participated.” Nicholson next provided context for that statement, “a lot of these guys are just coming out of prison and willing to share their stories. A lot of it is a trust issue. We were, we were able to really build a lot of trust with with with Meech, and the Flenory family. It was a process to open up and be able to share stories, a lot of folks would clam up when the camera comes on, of course. But, it takes some time, some easing of the tension, and some coaxing to get the rhythm of the interview. Everybody saw the value of the story and was able to share their story about their participation with BMF. It’s an American story. It’s their version of the American dream.”
The “BMF” crime drama is slated to return for its second season in January 2023.

“On the Come Up” is the directorial debut of Emmy-nominated actor Sanaa Lathan. The film also stars Clifford “Method Man” Smith and Da’Vine Joy as Aunt Pooh.
Method Man’s acting resume is deep. With over 20 years in Hollywood, his most recent roles have been in TV shows like the hit STARZ crime drama “Power Book II: Ghost” and “Godfather of Harlem.” Meth’s roots are in hip-hop, debuting in the ’90s with the pioneering Wu-Tang Clan.
In the film, Meth portrays a music manager named “Supreme.” I spoke with him during the AAFCA Roundtable series about what tips he provided to the young actors portraying rappers in the film. Spoiler alert, he said nothing. Instead, he explained his reason why.
Well, honestly, I got there a little later than everybody else. And these kids are, they’re trained, so they’re good. They’re damn good in this film. So as far as advice and things of that nature, no, I didn’t have to give any advice; I think they were already equipped, or else they wouldn’t have gotten the job. As far as hip-hop goes, they didn’t need my input. I was there to give it, but they didn’t need it, because we had the great Rhapsody there. And she kind of whipped everybody into shape. So it was great to sit down and observe the growth as far as Jamila. Where she went with her cadence and flow and how she pretty much adapted to it so quickly.

I asked Winter and Hawley what their inspiration was in creating the series, especially in creating the character of Simone, a middle-aged black woman in these particular circumstances. There are many ways this series could have gone, but the choice per Hawley and Winter was deliberate, especially coming off of 2020 and the racial reckoning.
Hawley explained that you couldn’t do a police show in 2022 without addressing the injustice that can accompany this line of work.
“I just think that as a police show today, we’re just trying to be as self-aware as we can. This started back on “The Rookie,” from its inception, but after George Floyd was killed, we took a hard look at ourselves and the stories we had told. We actually tasked a few writers with doing a report card, like going back through all our episodes. And asking, how did we do? For the most part, we did really well because we had always tried to be aspirational about cops doing things the right way. But at the same time, we were also portraying a version of policing that is alien to a big part of the population.”
Hawley provided more details, “and so that was sort of our mission starting in season three, how do we talk about policing? How do we have our characters grounded more in the real world of policing and the issues from systemic injustice to police union issues and all that kind of stuff? So it was a natural progression for us going into FEDS, especially with Niecey as our star, to lean into that. I mean, the FBI has a long history of injustice and intemperance, so how do we bring a character like Niecey into that world and put her in a special unit that is trying to shake things up? And just have her be a woman who’s used to being her own advocate because she had to be. How do you put her in that world and have her navigate through that? And at the same time, be a show that people look forward to watching it and having fun with. It’s an escapist, and it’s sort of a lot to carry. But I feel like we can’t be a police show in this day and age without being self-aware.”

]]>
The Nets moved to Brooklyn in 2012 with a lot of fanfare and the promise to bring in star players who would help them win a championship. However, in their first decade in Brooklyn, the Nets have made the playoffs seven times but won just two playoff series. But there are high hopes that everything will finally come together during the 2022-23 season.
It starts with Kevin Durant, who has walked back his trade request from earlier in the summer and agreed to stay in Brooklyn. He gives the Nets the type of superstar who can lead them to a championship. The Nets should also get an obvious boost from having Kyrie Irving available for a full season, assuming New York state’s COVID-19 mandates don’t interfere with his availability the way they did last season.
Finally, the third piece of the puzzle is the enigmatic Ben Simmons, who is yet to make his Brooklyn debut. Simmons didn’t play at all last season and is coming off back surgery in May. But if he’s healthy this season and can quickly learn to play alongside Irving and Durant, the Nets could have arguably the best trio in the league. With Joe Harris returning after an injury-plagued season that limited him to 14 games last year and the Nets bringing in T.J. Warren this offseason, Brooklyn also has a strong supporting cast to complement its sensational trio.
The Lakers also possess a trio that undoubtedly has championship potential. LeBron James and Anthony Davis have played together for the past three seasons, guiding the Lakers to the 2020 NBA championship. Meanwhile, Russell Westbrook came aboard before the start of last season, although things didn’t work out as planned with the Lakers missing the playoffs.
The problems that LA’s trio has are age and durability. James will turn 38 by the end of the season, while Westbrook will be 34 by the 2023 NBA Finals. The latter is also coming off one of his worst seasons, receiving heavy criticism with some indicating he’s a net-negative on the Lakers. Meanwhile, Davis has played 40 games or less in back-to-back seasons because of injuries, a problem that may not get better with his 30th birthday around the corner.
Of course, when those three players are healthy, the talent on the roster is undeniable. The Lakers can also expect help outside of the big three from Kendrick Nunn and the newly acquired Patrick Beverly. However, getting everyone on the roster healthy at the same time and on the same page as each other could be a task that’s easier said than done.
While the championship chances for both the Nets and Lakers are worth discussing, the fact is that both teams have far more potential flaws and question marks than the NBA’s other serious contenders. The Nets and Lakers both have talented trios that are capable of leading their team to a title. But both have little margin for error in getting there. Meanwhile, the Celtics and Bucks are formidable foes for the Nets in the Eastern Conference, while the Warriors, Suns, and Clippers all pose a serious challenge for the Lakers in the Western Conference. When all is said and done, we shouldn’t plan on seeing the Lakers or the Nets in the NBA Finals in 2023.
