NASCAR’s Tony Stewart Struck and Killed Kevin Ward Jr. During Sprint Cup Race

Tragedy struck in the world of NASCAR Saturday night when driver Tony Stewart drove his race car into another driver. 20-year-old Kevin Ward Jr. was pronounced dead at the hospital in Canandaigua, New York.

The incident took place during a Sprint Car race on a dirt track. Ward and Stewart crashed into each other on the track during a lap. Ward looked upset after guiding his car to the side when jumped out of the car and attempted to approach Stewart’s who was still racing on the track.

Per TMZ, officers said they are investigating Ward’s death as an “on-track” incident, and not a criminal matter. Stewart was supposed to race Sunday in the Sprint Cup race in Watkins Glen, NY. So far, he’s still planning to do so.

A spokesman released a statement on behalf of Stewart.

A tragic accident took place last night during a sprint car race in which Tony Stewart was participating. Tony was unhurt, but a fellow competitor lost his life. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. We’re still attempting to sort through all the details and we appreciate your understanding during this difficult time.

Stewart decided to withdraw from Sunday’s race.
